“Kites rise highest against the wind, not with it.” – Winston Churchill
The parent-child educative relationship at the core of Smartchoice Parenting must be re-created in schools as a more formal and planned teacher-pupil educative relationship. If this relationship is not established in school, it will likely be a place where children are competently instructed but not educated. Educative teaching in school requires more than subject matter instruction. It should have the same aim as parenting—helping a child become a morally responsible and independent adult. In this light, in addition to parents, I believe teachers, counsellors, school psychologists and others committed to rearing children will also gain insight regarding the adult’s role in guiding the child to adulthood.
SmartChoice Teaching is an effective and simple approach which encourages children from an early age to take responsibility for making the right choices, solving their own problems, building confidence and a hunger to do well at school.
I have worked with a growing number of pre-primary and primary schools who are finding that by adopting the principles of the Programme in the Teaching environment and introducing it to parents, means that for the first time both parents and teachers can educate from the same page and can devote their time to teaching children who really want to learn.
I have also been conducting workshops for teachers in order to make them aware that they are supposed to be the expert regarding the adult-child relationship and therefore need to gain insight as to how the manner in which the child is parented impacts on their behavior and potential. Many professionals believe that disorders such as ODD, ADHD and so on are unrelated to parenting. This is not so, research has shown that when parents are given the skills to parent their child, there are definite improvements across all manner of child behaviours.
In the training of all professionals qualified to assess, diagnose, and medicate children, virtually no training has been given regarding the adult-child relationship. The focus is only on the child. However, research has shown that the quality of parenting that children receive has a major impact on their development.
I have been registered to present workshops for educational psychologists worth 5 CPD points.
“I believe that this programme should actually be included in all secondary and tertiary education programmes, because this information is invaluable, practical and offers vital life –skills. Allowing the child become ‘who they are’ is an incredible thing, something that most parents strive for”.
“Concentration levels – she received an achievement award for maths and reading last term which is proof that she is really overcoming this problem and working hard”.
In the SmartChoice Parenting workshops, parents are shown how to increase positive interactions with their children. Feedback from participants show quite dramatic improvements in their children’s attitude and behaviour, their own parenting skills, as well as an improvement in children’s social skills and school adjustment.
Parenting Decoded is the only parenting programme that has success in eliminating extreme behaviour disorders.
